TRANSLATION

1-2) The following 33 emotions are known as vyabhicari

bhavas
indifference, melancholy, madness, humility, fatigue, vanity, pride, apprehension, fear, forgetfulness, anxiety, laziness, malady, fascination, death, stupor, shyness, concealment, memory, debate, fickleness, temperament, thoughtfulness, curiosity, delight, patience, envy, violence, sleep, deep sleep, sadness and alertness.

The vyabhicari

bhava called violence, however, can not touch the incomparably sweet madhura

rasa . All of the other vyabhicari

successively arise and flow towards the sthayi

bhava , circulating themselves around it happily in their own respective ways.

Under the shelter of the pure goodness produced by spontaneous devotional attachment, these vyabhicari emotions circulate about in conjunction with the particular rasa in play. They are all just like waves on the sthayi

bhava ocean. They arise, do their emotional work, and then quickly slip back again into the ocean, not to be seen by anyone anymore.
